:: About Carmelita

At nineteen years old most people still have no idea what they want to do with their lives, much less where they want to do it and how they plan on getting there.

Carmelita Curtis is clearly not most people, however. Ever since she made her decision to finish her high school education in Philadelphia instead of in Bermuda because she felt she could concentrate better there, Carmelita seems to have known what she is about and how she wants to achieve her goals.

Currently working as a secretary at Teen Services (as well as making some extra money as a Bacardi Girl promoting new Bacardi products), Carmelita plans to attend school in Miami studying graphic, fashion and interior design.

And she says in ten years she sees herself living and working in Miami - "with a nice paying job doing interior design or with my own clothing line".

Like most young Bermudians, Carmelita's biggest obstacle right now is money. "It would be nice if there was someone to help with tuition," she said - but she's not letting finances stop her.

She plans to continue working and saving her money in Bermuda for the next three or four years before applying for a Government grant from the US (with an American mother, she has American status) as well as scholarships here in Bermuda.

And although the Government Training Board have been more than willing to help her she said it was difficult to take advantage of their assistance. "They've been calling me to do this computer course," she said. "But it's during the day, from 9 till 4, and I work. It would be nice if they did it at night."

Fortunately she enjoys her jobs. Being a Bacardi Girl is a lot of fun, she said, but working at Teen Services demands a lot more from her. "I get to see all the teenagers coming in with problems," she said. "I have to be an example for them, especially the ones doing the schooling there."

Carmelita is interested in the world beyond Bermuda's shores. Egypt would be her number one travel destination, she said, having always wanted to see the pyramids, and she loves traveling to places she has never been.

Even with her plans to live and work in Miami, though, she said she would come back to visit Bermuda, especially in the summertime.

And what would she tell young people in Bermuda about achieving their goals? "Make sure you finish high school, get good grades," she said. "Strive for the best and maybe somebody will help assist you in your future goals."
