:: About LaKiesha

“If you don’t like me the way I am that’s your business … It’s my mentality Bermuda’s not ready for.”
So said 21-year old Lakiesha - nothing if not strong-minded, and disillusioned with what she sees as the limits of The Rock. “Not Bermuda itself but people in Bermuda are quick to down somebody,” she said.
For example: “I don’t wear makeup, I don’t put beads in my hair, I don’t go out of my way for anybody, to try to look like something I’m not.” However in Bermuda, a place where “everybody worries about everybody”, Lakiesha’s determination to be herself often got her into trouble.
“I used to get into lots of confrontations,” she said. “If you want to know something about me just come out and ask. I’ve got nothing to hide.”
Finally, tired of the rumor mills and the gossiping and the pettiness, Lakiesha had had enough. So she leapt on a plane and left - without telling anyone that she was going. “I was 18 years old.
“I went to San Juan, I went to New York, I went to St. Croix, to Germany, London, Connecticut, Atlanta, everywhere - Florida - you name it, I did it.”
Lakiesha spent most of her time in New York working odd jobs as a hairdresser, a baby sitter, or modeling for sketch artists. She lived in a hotel, in apartments around the city. “I met a lot of people, big people, that could take you places” - such as people working for Fashion Institute of Technology, one of the leading fashion design school in the world.
And it was hard. “I was out there on my own, I didn’t know anybody,” she said. Unable to call family or friends when she was in trouble, she had to rely on her own wit and resourcefulness. “You had to manage your money, you had to worry about yourself and that’s why I tell people nowadays - if you just go away and you see how hard it is to take care of yourself you would not come back as small-minded as you are.

“Don’t go with any plan, knowing anything, nothing,” she said. “One day I just said you know what, I’m going to New York. And I bought a plane ticket and went. My mother and my little brother were the only two that really heard from me for the first six months. Whatever went on, went on.”
Bermuda, she says, is a place to come to after you’ve done things, a place to come for rest and relaxation. “It’s a pleasure trip. But if you want a wake-up call you need to go out there and you need to go by yourself.”
15 months later she returned because of her mother and little brother. Now she’s working hard at Rosa’s Cantina as a cocktail waitress/bar supervisor, making money, and has a man - yet she’s not ready to settle down in Bermuda yet. She is working towards being able to pay for school in London by 2005, studying forensic science and reinsurance. “I want to get my feet wet with different things,” she said. “I don’t want to be stuck in one job for the rest of my life.”
It is her wide range of experiences that Lakiesha believes sets her apart from other people. “I can relate to them but they can’t relate to me,” she said. “I would give that to a lot of young girls.
“Girls nowadays think pregnancy is a fashion show. If you’re young and you’re in school don’t lay down and have unprotected sex. Go out there and see the world - go to South Africa, to North America, Indonesia, India, any of those places. And if you meet one girl that has a child she would tell you exactly what it’s like to have a child at under 21 years old, because not one of those girls will smile about it.
“(Someone once told me): I have the heart of God and the smile of an angel,” she finished. “My main goal in life is just to be happy.”
